Message I took a month off work when my son started school. My employer was supportive but I spent several months putting in the ground work to make sure my unpaid leave was agreed. I had no contact with my employer while I was away from work, except when they paid me by mistake. I’m glad I took the time off – it helped my son settle into school and my family to settle into the school routine. I work four days a week and don’t do the school drop off or pick up on those days, so it was also helpful to meet some of the other parents and I now have people to say hello to when I do the school run on my non-working day. It’s also given me the confidence to ask for more unpaid leave during the school summer holidays next year – I’ll see whether I’m successful or not!

This is really helpful - thank you
My 2nd maternity leave coincided with my eldest starting school and I loved being there for her. I hope to take 4 weeks off when my youngest starts school and for my husband to take another 4 weeks. That should take us up to half term so plenty of time for our youngest to settle in, I hope.
