Message I had 12 months off with my first maternity leave and returned to my job in a mid tier law firm with a little bump, working a slightly reduced week. I worked extremely hard for the few months I was back but I felt I was viewed as having one foot out of the door as I was already preparing for another maternity leave. So when an ex colleague offered me a job during my second maternity leave it was an easy decision. Having had two children it was a good point to move and start afresh as a working mother, rather than trying to pretend to be the person I used to be pre-children. I started at the new place after 14 months off with my second child and it is going very well. Because I was able to be very clear on my requirements at the outset the part time arrangements are largely stuck to. I have found it is best to offer a little flexiblity (even when it isn't asked) so that you are offered flexibility in return (for example doing a little bit off work on a day off means you don't feel guilty for for coming in late another day because of a child's doctor appointment). Being open and explaining where there are struggles also helps rather than trying to do everything and spreading yourself too thinly. It's a cliche but communication is key.
