Message My transition to and return from shared parental leave was handled very well. It took hard work and planning on the part of myself and my employer but it was worth it. I feel like I never left! What has been astonishing is that my partner (male), who has just started shared parental leave for 6 months, is being treated quite badly - being treated either as if he is leaving his job permanently or going on a long holiday! I had hoped that employers would embrace shared parental leave and that it would help to difuse the discrimination many women sadly experience. Our experience is seemingly showing that discrimination and stigma is being shifted now onto men as well. I hope this is just a one off and not an emrging theme. Work life and parenting are both life affirming and important - it would be wonderful if both could be embraced, valued and respected in public and private spheres. Let's hope for and work towards achieving this goal.
