Message My husband and I shared my maternity leave (under the previous regime). I took the first 6 months of leave and when I returned to work he took the second 6 months. We found it a very positive experience. For me, I was able to return to work as the main breadwinner in our family knowing that my son was being looked after by my husband. My husband was able to share in raising our son during the important early months. His work were surprised at his request but supportive. He was welcomed by our NCT group to the weekly catch up sessions and joined a variety of baby groups. On his return to work he has been promoted twice, so it has not impacted on his career path. Our positive experience has encouraged other parents we know to split their leave to a lesser or similar extent. The other positive of splitting leave is that we continue to split housework and childcare fairly equally. As we have both been the stay at home parent for a period of time there is no automatic assumption that one of us will do a particular task (e.g. packing for our son to go on holiday or making his packed lunch for school), which allows us to balance our work commitments with our home commitments.
