Message I had a mixed experience with my maternity leave, but it was mainly positive. Despite being told someone from HR would keep in touch with me, no-one did. And the maternity pay was the statutory minimum, despite promoting themselves as a ‘family friendly’ business.
But, when I found out about a promotion opportunity during maternity leave from a friend, my employer and the agency they were using for the interview process were supportive of my situation during application:
• I put my application in on the day I went into hospital to be induced.
• The agency wanted me to attend an interview at their office in London (approx. 2 hour train journey), but when I explained I’d just had a baby by emergency C section, they offered to do a phone interview instead.
• My employers gave me the last available interview slot so I was as recovered as I could be from the birth before the interview (which also involved a trip to London)
I got the job! I was very fortunate on my return to work that I was working for someone I’d worked for before, who agreed my four day working week with no fuss. And they had a room set aside which I could use for pumping breast milk. Unfortunately, by the time I returned, they’d moved offices and this was no longer available.
