Message This was my second maternity leave and I knew what to expect this time so thought my experience would be easier. It definitely wasn't, but I knew how to deal with things better.
In a fairly long career I have had two performance ratings that weren't good or better. Both whilst pregnant. Second time around I stood my ground and it was eventually changed with no evidence to support it, but it is still something that is plaguing my work with people's views being clouded by this.

On returning to work, after taking a full year, I found it hard to get back into things. I had taken some KIT days to ensure I knew what was happening but received no support at all, no help with integrating back into the job after a year off and was expected to hit the ground running and, as before, perform better than my non-parent colleagues to justify reduced face time. All whilst lacking the confidence needed after a year off.

I decided to return full time as I found part time working after my first maternity leave really tough. Hard to progress with my career and hard to enjoy my day at home knowing I was missing out on things at work. I hoped full time would be easier, but it certainly hasn't been much easier and I often wish I had part time hours to take a bit of a break given reduced sleep hours and two children to care for.

What has been better this time is shared responsibility. My husband takes as much time off for poorly children as I do, which didn't happen last time. He does equal number of drop offs and we have help with pick ups so both children are home when I get home.
