Faced redundancy upon return

Message My ex-boss encouraged me to take as long as I wanted up to 12 months, he then left to another division of the bank. I was contacted by HR in early 2013 at the start of the 7th month of maternity leave. In the meeting they said I would be made redundant in the end of mat. leave as my department was being re-organised (the rest of the team, both more junior and more senior members, were offered places). I got "strong" rating at the performance review before mat leave but, when I questioned the validity of redundancy, I was told it had nothing to do with me becoming a mother and that compared to other two director-level candidates for redundancy (from other teams) I was considered "weaker and with less potential". A more senior male banker, a boss of my ex-boss, who had to be present at most of the discussions with HR, DID help me eventually – he introduced me to a number of people internally, gave advice on which areas of the bank I should move to, etc. Still, the second half of mat leave was a stressful nightmare (I am a breadwinner) with me rushing to external and internal meetings and interviews; I also had to use therapy (paid by insurance) to help me cope as I was getting panic attacks. Five months into the process I was ready to take their redundancy package (one month for one year of service) as I felt no strength to go into a lengthy legal battle. Eventually though, I found a back office role with the same bank (so no redundancy money). It pays 30% less but I have much better hours/much less travel. I forgot to add that i had 9 years with them before going on mat leave.
