Message I have just returned to full time work after 9 months’ maternity leave. I am fortunate in that I was promoted just before my maternity leave started, which reassured me that taking time off to have a baby has not (yet) hurt my career prospects. So far I have benefited from an extremely supportive partner, who is able to pick up our daughter from nursery most days. I’d be really stuck if I had to take responsibility for pick-ups, given that nursery closes at 6pm and I have my commute is around an hour. I have also put into place contingency arrangements for those days when neither of us can manage the nursery pick up.
I splurged on a new professional wardrobe before returning to work, which has helped me to feel less mumsy on my return. I absolutely recommend this – I think it’s important for career women to look the part, especially when surrounded by men in expensive hand-made suits.
Generally I’m really happy to be back at work and am enjoying the stimulation. Returning to work was definitely the right decision for me.

I did the same! I used a personal shopper in our local department store which made the whole process super quick and efficient and I was pleased with the results.

Absolutely agree about the new wardrobe. I started my childcare arrangements a week early each time so that I would have extra time for settling them in if needed (it wasn't in either case but I felt less desperate), and also to make sure I had a couple of days to myself for buying work clothes I felt really good in. This helped me feel confident going back instead of struggling into my pre-baby trousers.
